CITY OF TROVE
An Archaeological Adventure Thriller · Book One · by Micki Sharp
A word about this page. Everything else on this site is real — the pearls, the hangar, the hundred years of family flying, every item in every collection. This is the one thing we made up. We think you'll like it anyway.
He spent forty-one years being told what was wrong with him. Nobody ever guessed the truth: he was built for a different world.
Roan Wells captains a private Boeing 787 for an owner he has never met. He holds a spotless record, a house on a desert mesa he chose without knowing why, and a lifetime of small wrongnesses he has learned to hide — the memory that forgets nothing, the languages that come too easily, the airport magnetometers that trip when he walks through clean.
Then a salvage crew raises an impossible stone from a mountain crypt, a beam of aquamarine light stands straight up out of a sleeping Andean volcano, and the quiet arrangement that has steered Roan's entire life begins calling in its debts. At the bottom of Lake Titicaca there is a door. Behind the door is a city that has been waiting twelve thousand years — and it knows his name.
But Roan is not the only one who kept the old appointment. An order of seven ancient houses has watched the world's waters for four hundred generations, and its patience has curdled into a hunt. Something else has been waiting too — behind a deeper door, in the dark below the city, pressing at a crack only it can feel.
The watch is ending. The heir has come home.
Why a pilot wrote this book
The author's grandfather soloed a Velie Monocoupe in 1928. Four generations later the family is still flying — three airline captains in the line, a century in the air, and a habit of saying the important words out loud so the next generation carries them before they understand them. City of Trove is about a four-hundred-generation watch. The four-generation version is documented on our Heritage page — that part is all true.
